Dental anxiety stops too many people from getting the care they need. IV sedation changes that, putting you in a deeply relaxed state so treatment feels effortless. You stay comfortable from start to finish, with little to no memory of the appointment.
  • Deeply relaxed from the first moment to the last
  • No memory of the procedure for most patients
  • Comfortable for longer or more complex treatments

Does this sound like your experience?

Dental anxiety is more common than most people realize, and it keeps genuinely good people from getting care that matters. If any of these feel familiar, you are not alone.
  • Avoiding the dentist for years at a time
  • Feeling panicked before every appointment
  • Struggling with a sensitive gag reflex
  • Canceling appointments at the last minute
  • Putting off necessary treatment indefinitely
  • Feeling tense and unable to relax in the chair
  • Recognizing the pattern is a meaningful first step. A more comfortable path forward exists, and it may be closer than you think.

What happens when treatment keeps waiting?

  • Conditions Quietly Worsen

Small issues left untreated grow into complex ones that require more extensive care.

  • More Involved Treatment Ahead

The longer a problem goes unaddressed, the more work it typically takes to correct it.

  • Costs Tend to Increase

Minor treatment is almost always less involved and less costly than the care required later.

  • Daily Discomfort Builds

Pain or sensitivity that could have been resolved continues to affect your day-to-day comfort.

  • Fewer Options Remain

Some treatments are time-sensitive; waiting can limit which approaches are still available to you.

  • Confidence Takes a Hit

Untreated dental concerns often affect how you feel about your smile over time.

  • Starting sooner almost always means a simpler, more comfortable path to the outcome you want.

What Is IV Sedation and How Does It Work?

IV sedation is a form of dental sedation where a sedative is delivered directly into the bloodstream through a small IV line. This allows the medication to take effect quickly and gives the clinical team precise, real-time control over your level of relaxation throughout the appointment. You remain in a deeply comfortable state, breathing on your own, while the treatment is completed around you. Most patients have little to no memory of the procedure once it is over.

At The Smile Company, IV sedation is administered by board-certified anesthesiologists, not simply general staff, which is a meaningful distinction for patient safety. Patients considering IV sedation in Greenville, SC will find that our process begins with a thorough review of your medical history and current medications before anything is scheduled. Vital signs are monitored continuously throughout the appointment, and the sedation level is adjusted as needed to keep you comfortable from beginning to end.

  • Takes effect within minutes of administration

Is IV Sedation the Right Option for You?

Many patients wonder whether sedation dentistry is meant for them or reserved for extreme cases. The truth is that a wide range of people benefit from IV sedation, including many who assumed they simply had to push through the discomfort.
  • Have avoided dental care for a year or more because of fear or anxiety
  • Have had a difficult or distressing dental experience in the past
  • Struggle to stay relaxed or still during appointments
  • Have a sensitive gag reflex that makes treatment uncomfortable
  • Want to complete more extensive treatment in fewer visits
  • Not Sure If You Qualify?

That question comes up often, and the honest answer is that IV sedation suits more patients than most people expect. A consultation gives us the clearest picture of whether it is the right fit for your specific needs and health history.

What to Expect During Your IV Sedation Appointment

Many of our patients tell us the anticipation was the hardest part. From the moment you arrive, every step is designed to keep you calm, informed, and as comfortable as possible throughout.
    1

    Health Review and Pre-Sedation Planning

Before your appointment, we conduct a thorough review of your medical history, current medications, and overall health. This step allows us to determine the appropriate sedation approach for you and address any questions you have in advance. You leave this step with a clear picture of what to expect on treatment day.

    2

    Arrival and IV Placement

On the day of your appointment, a small IV line is placed, typically in your arm or hand. Our board-certified anesthesiologist oversees this process, and most patients find placement quick and comfortable. Once the IV is in place, the sedative begins to take effect within minutes, and you will feel a deep sense of calm settle in.

    3

    Treatment While You Rest

With you in a relaxed, comfortable state, your dental treatment is completed while your vital signs are monitored continuously. The anesthesiologist adjusts your sedation level throughout the appointment to ensure you remain at ease. Most patients have little to no memory of this portion of the visit once it is over.

    4

    Recovery and Escort

Home When treatment is complete, you are moved to a comfortable recovery area while the sedative clears your system. A trusted adult will need to drive you home, so arranging that in advance is part of the planning process. Our team stays with you and checks in until you are ready to leave safely.

    5

    Follow-Up and Healing

Depending on the treatment completed, you may receive aftercare instructions and a follow-up appointment. Most patients feel like themselves again within a day, though some mild grogginess on treatment day is normal. We remain available to answer any questions that come up during your recovery.

Ready to Feel Calm and Cared For From Start to Finish?

What to Expect After IV Sedation

Most patients are genuinely surprised by how manageable the recovery feels. The sedative clears your system relatively quickly, and our team is with you every step of the way.

    First 24-48 Hours

You can expect to feel drowsy or groggy for the remainder of treatment day, which is completely normal. Plan to rest at home, avoid driving, and let a trusted adult stay with you during this period. Most patients feel significantly more alert by the following morning.

    First 1-2 Weeks

Any recovery beyond the sedation itself depends on the treatment that was completed during your appointment. We provide specific guidance based on your procedure so you know exactly what to expect. Most patients return to their normal routines within a day or two, with any residual effects from the dental treatment fading steadily.

    Long-Term

Every patient responds a little differently, and healing timelines vary depending on overall health and the nature of the treatment performed. We provide a personalized aftercare plan with clear instructions before you leave, and our team is easy to reach if anything unexpected comes up.

    IV Sedation FAQs

If you have questions about IV sedation, you are in good company. Below are the ones we hear most often, answered honestly so you can feel confident moving forward.

    Is IV sedation safe?

Yes. IV sedation is safe when administered by qualified professionals. At our practice, a board-certified anesthesiologist oversees the entire process, monitors your vital signs throughout, and adjusts the sedation as needed. Your medical history and current medications are reviewed in advance to ensure the approach is appropriate for you.
Not necessarily. IV sedation produces a deeply relaxed state where you remain able to breathe independently, but most patients have little to no memory of the appointment afterward. It is not the same as general anesthesia, though the level of relaxation is significant and closely managed.
Yes, arranging a ride home is required. The sedative affects coordination and alertness for several hours after the procedure, making it unsafe to drive. A trusted adult should accompany you to the appointment, remain during the procedure, and drive you home.
Our IV sedation is administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. This is a meaningful distinction from practices where sedation is managed by general dental staff, and it reflects our commitment to patient safety throughout every procedure.
Very quickly. Because the sedative is delivered directly into the bloodstream, most patients feel the effects within minutes of the IV line being placed. This allows the clinical team to make real-time adjustments throughout the appointment.
Most patients feel nothing and retain no memory of the treatment itself. While you remain conscious enough to breathe independently, you are deeply relaxed and largely unaware of what is happening. Your comfort is monitored continuously to maintain that state.
Candidacy depends on your individual health history, which is why we conduct a thorough medical review before your appointment. Many patients with health considerations are still excellent candidates. A consultation gives us the clearest picture of what is appropriate for you.
Most patients feel the strongest effects for several hours following treatment, with grogginess typically clearing by the following morning. Individual responses vary depending on health, metabolism, and the sedative used. We provide guidance on what to expect before you leave.
IV sedation is commonly used for longer, more involved procedures as well as for patients with significant anxiety regardless of treatment type. Whether it is appropriate for a specific procedure is something we discuss during your consultation, taking your health history and treatment needs into account.
You will receive detailed preparation instructions before your appointment. Typically, patients are asked to avoid eating or drinking for a set period beforehand and to arrange a responsible adult to accompany them. Following these instructions carefully is important for your safety and for the sedation to work as intended.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐From day one, The Smile Company has made me feel so welcomed and comfortable. The entire team is incredibly kind, caring, and engaging. They truly take the time to listen, explain everything, and do everything they can to help you. Going to the dentist can be stressful, but they make every visit such a positive experience.I even brought them some homemade cinnamon rolls from my small business, and they showed me so much love and support. That meant more to me than they know. It’s rare to find a dental office that genuinely treats you like family, and that’s exactly how they make me feel.I’m so thankful I found The Smile Company and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a dental team that truly cares about their patients. Thank you all for everything you do!Also shout to Mr.Matthew and his beautiful wife Mrs.Scarlet and to the Doctor himself Dr.Jacob you have such an amazing team behind you !! I definitely recommend them to anyone !!!!!

I TOOK MY MOTHER TO THE SMILE CO. IN GREENVILLE TO SEE DR. THORPE JACOBS. MY MOTHER IS IN HER LATE 70’s AND ⭐️NOT IN THE BEST HEALTH. DR. JACOBS AND HIS STAFF WERE VERY THOROUGH & PROFESSIONAL. MY MOTHER HAD HER UPPER TEETH EXTRACTED, IMPLANT POSTS PLACED AND A NON-REMOVABLE UPPER PLATE IN LESS THAN HALF A DAY. I HAVE BEEN A NURSE FOR 30+ YEARS AND I WAS VERY CONCERNED WITH HOW THINGS WOULD GO. SHE DID ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL AND NEVER COMPLAINED OF ANY DISCOMFORT. SHE LOVES HER SMILE NOW AND HAS ACTUALLY STARTED PHYSICALLY FEELING BETTER. SHE IS NOW MORE ACTIVE AND OUTGOING. IT HAS CHANGED HER LIFE FOR THE BETTER AND GIVEN HER CONFIDENCE AND A SMILE SHE IS PROUD OF. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE SMILE CO. , 5 STARS ALL THE WAY ⭐️

I absolutely love this place. Like look forward to going in. It is a very inviting and calm atmosphere. Most of all though everyone knows you by name(which is a really big thing to me). The dental work is amazing. I get so many compliments on how pretty my teeth are. And having Dr. Jacob do them instead of other dentist was the best decision I’ve ever made for myself. I promise it’s worth it. My anesthesiologist was great and so nice and that just makes you feel more comfortable. Dr Jacob’s is so very nice and you can tell he cares a lot towards what the patient wants done. Chrissy has been so helpful from the beginning and explains everything so well to you..I was honestly amazed at how well she described everything that was going to be done and how thorough she was. Matthew and Scarlett were very helpful in helping me get everything set up and they answered every question I had..even though I didn’t have all the questions at 1time. I have a family member that loves the service and care I received and how amazing my teeth look that will be going to see Dr Jacob’s and his staff about getting some of his dental work done. If I were you I would choose this place to have my implants done. The quality and care is exceptional. And as I said the office is a very relaxing place.

Had all on 4 top and bottom Monday April 6th at 11and was back at work the 7th with just an ibuprofen for mild inflammation. I am not good with mouth pain but literally was very minimal and would be fine with nothing. Dr. Jacob and the whole team are like a family and it shows. I went to four places in person before chosing the Smile Company. The other places I felt like a number and at Smile Company I felt at home and that the whole team cared about me. Best decision I ever made. Invest in yourself, you won’t regret it!
