Pterygoid Implants in Greenville, SC

Full-Arch Restoration Without Bone Grafting or Long Delays

For patients who have been told they lack enough bone for traditional implants, pterygoid implants offer a path forward. We place these specialized implants into dense bone at the back of the upper jaw, bypassing the need for bone grafting and extended healing timelines. You can move toward a complete, secure smile without the added procedures that typically stand in the way.
  • Restore a full arch without the need for bone grafting first
  • Treat severe upper jaw bone loss that other implant types cannot address
  • Move forward sooner without waiting months for graft healing

Does This Sound Like Your Experience?

Missing most or all of your upper teeth is hard enough. When you add years of bone loss to the picture, finding a solution that actually works can feel out of reach. If you have heard the word “no” from other providers, you are not alone.
  • Told you lack enough bone for implants
  • Struggling to eat foods you once enjoyed
  • Feeling self-conscious every time you smile or speak
  • Avoiding social situations because of your teeth
  • Relying on dentures that shift, slip, or feel uncomfortable
  • Watching your facial structure change as bone continues to deteriorate
  • If any of these feel familiar, there may be a solution designed specifically for your situation. Pterygoid implants exist for cases just like yours.

What Happens When You Keep Waiting?

  • Bone Loss Deepens

Each month without support, your remaining upper jaw bone continues to diminish.

  • Fewer Options Remain

The longer bone loss progresses, the more complex any future treatment becomes.

  • Dentures Fit Worse

As bone resorbs, even well-fitted dentures become increasingly loose and uncomfortable.

  • Facial Changes Accelerate

Without bone stimulation, facial structure continues to collapse gradually over time.

  • Confidence Fades Quietly

Years spent hiding your smile take a real toll on how you show up daily.

  • Treatment Costs Increase

More deterioration often means more preparatory work and higher overall investment.

  • The sooner you move forward, the more we can work with. Early action opens more paths to a stable, lasting result.

What Are Pterygoid Implants and How Do They Work?

Pterygoid implants are a specialized type of dental implant designed for patients with significant bone loss in the upper jaw. Rather than anchoring into the standard jawbone like a conventional implant, they are placed at an angle into the pterygoid bone, a dense region located at the back of the upper jaw near the base of the skull. This area retains bone density even when the front portions of the jaw have experienced considerable resorption, making it a reliable anchor point where traditional implants cannot be placed. Because the implant bypasses the areas of loss entirely, bone grafting is typically not required.

At The Smile Company, pterygoid implants in Greenville, SC are planned using advanced 3D imaging technology that maps your bone structure with precision before a single incision is made. This allows us to determine exact placement angles, select the appropriate implant length, and customize every aspect of your treatment to your specific anatomy. The result is a placement approach that makes use of the bone you already have, reducing both treatment time and the number of preparatory procedures involved.

  • Anchored into pterygoid bone, which resists resorption even with significant jaw bone loss
  • Typically eliminates the need for sinus lifts or bone grafting procedures
  • Most often used as part of a full-arch upper jaw restoration

Are Pterygoid Implants the Right Fit for You?

Many patients who ask about pterygoid implants have already been turned away somewhere else. The most common reason is that traditional implants were not possible due to bone loss. You may qualify even if other providers have said you do not.
  • Have been told you have too little upper jaw bone for standard implants
  • Currently wearing upper dentures that no longer fit comfortably or securely
  • Want to avoid bone grafting or sinus lift procedures before getting implants
  • Have experienced significant upper tooth loss over a number of years
  • Are looking for a stable, fixed solution rather than a removable appliance
  • Not Sure Whether You Qualify?

It is a fair question, and one we hear often. The only way to know for certain is through a thorough evaluation, including 3D imaging that maps your actual bone structure. A pterygoid implant consultation gives you a clear answer and a personalized recommendation based on exactly what your anatomy allows.

Your Pterygoid Implant Process, Step by Step

Many of our patients tell us they were relieved by how manageable the process felt once they understood what to expect. We design every step around your comfort, and we walk alongside you from the first conversation to your final result.
    1

    Consultation and 3D Imaging

Your first visit focuses entirely on understanding your situation. We capture detailed 3D scans of your upper jaw to assess bone density, volume, and the precise angles needed for pterygoid placement. You leave this appointment with a clear picture of what treatment looks like for you specifically, including timeline, steps, and what to expect along the way.

    2

    Treatment Planning and Design

Using your imaging data, we map out exact implant placement before your procedure begins. This includes selecting implant dimensions, determining angulation into the pterygoid bone, and coordinating your final restoration design with our in-house lab. Because everything happens under one roof at The Smile Company, there are no hand-off delays and no guesswork between teams.

    3

    Implant Placement

On the day of your procedure, you are kept completely comfortable through IV sedation administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. Dr. Jacob places the pterygoid implants at precise angles into the dense bone at the back of your upper jaw. Most patients are surprised by how little they experience during treatment, and many report feeling calm and relaxed throughout.

    4

    Healing and Integration

Over the weeks following placement, the implants fuse with the surrounding bone in a process that creates a stable, permanent foundation. You will have a temporary restoration in place during this period so you are never without teeth. We monitor your healing closely and keep you informed at every checkpoint.

    5

    Final Restoration

Once integration is complete, your custom-crafted final restoration is secured to your implants. Designed and finished in our in-house lab, your new teeth are built to match your facial structure, bite, and aesthetic goals. You leave with a complete, stable smile that functions the way natural teeth are meant to.

Ready to Move Forward With a Solution That Works?

What to Expect After Pterygoid Implant Treatment

Most patients are genuinely surprised by how manageable recovery feels after pterygoid implant placement. You will have clear guidance and direct access to our team throughout every phase of healing.

    First 24-48 Hours

Some swelling and mild discomfort around the surgical site is normal during this initial window. We recommend resting, keeping your head slightly elevated, and sticking to soft foods. Over-the-counter pain relief or prescribed medication typically manages any discomfort well, and most patients feel significantly better by the end of the second day.

    First 1-2 Weeks

Swelling continues to subside during this period, and most patients return to their regular routines within the first week. You will want to continue with soft foods and avoid anything that puts direct pressure on the surgical area. This is also when the implants begin the early stages of integrating with the pterygoid bone. Most people find this phase far easier than they anticipated.

    Long-Term Healing

Full integration between the implant and the surrounding bone takes several months to complete. During this time, your temporary restoration keeps your smile intact and functional. We schedule regular check-ins to confirm everything is progressing as expected. Most patients notice little disruption to daily life during this phase.

Every patient heals on their own timeline, and individual factors like overall health and bone density can influence your experience. We provide a personalized aftercare plan with specific instructions for your case, and our team remains available to answer any questions that come up along the way.

    Pterygoid Implant FAQs

If you have questions about pterygoid implants, you are in good company. Below you will find answers to the questions we hear most often from patients who are exploring this option for the first time.

What makes pterygoid implants different from standard dental implants?

Standard implants anchor into the front or mid portion of the jawbone, which requires adequate bone volume in those areas. Pterygoid implants are placed at an angle into the pterygoid bone at the back of the upper jaw, a region that retains density even after significant bone loss. This distinction is what makes them possible for patients who are not candidates for conventional implants.
In most cases, no. The entire purpose of pterygoid implants is to bypass the areas of the jaw that have lost bone. By anchoring into the dense pterygoid bone, we avoid the need for grafting procedures that would otherwise add months to your treatment timeline.
Timelines vary based on each patient’s healing and how many other steps are involved, but most patients can expect the full process to span several months. Your consultation will give you a specific estimate based on your imaging and treatment plan.
Most patients report much less discomfort than they expected. IV sedation, administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist, keeps you comfortable throughout the procedure. Post-placement discomfort is typically mild and manageable with prescribed or over-the-counter medication within the first few days.
This depends on your specific anatomy and the type of restoration being planned. For full-arch upper restorations, pterygoid implants are often used in combination with other implant types to create a complete, stable support structure. Dr. Jacob will determine the right configuration during your planning appointment.
Quite possibly, yes. Pterygoid implants were developed specifically for cases where bone loss has ruled out conventional options. A 3D imaging evaluation is the only way to know for certain, but many patients who received a “no” elsewhere have gone on to qualify for this treatment.
Most patients return to regular activities within a week. Some swelling and mild discomfort are normal in the first few days and typically resolve quickly. You will have a temporary restoration in place throughout healing so your daily life is minimally disrupted.
With proper care, pterygoid implants are designed to last for decades. They are anchored in dense bone that resists resorption, and they function as a stable, permanent foundation for your full-arch restoration.
Certain health factors are considered during your evaluation, and Dr. Jacob reviews your full medical history as part of the planning process. Many patients with complex health backgrounds are still able to move forward with treatment. The best way to understand your specific eligibility is through a comprehensive consultation.
We offer everything you need under one roof, including an on-site surgical center, an in-house lab, IV sedation with a board-certified anesthesiologist, and Dr. Jacob’s three decades of specialized implant experience. There are no referrals, no hand-offs, and no gaps in continuity of care from your first appointment to your final result.

    What Our Patients Say

    What Our Patients Say

Had all on 4 top and bottom Monday April 6th at 11and was back at work the 7th with just an ibuprofen for mild inflammation. I am not good with mouth pain but literally was very minimal and would be fine with nothing. Dr. Jacob and the whole team are like a family and it shows. I went to four places in person before chosing the Smile Company. The other places I felt like a number and at Smile Company I felt at home and that the whole team cared about me. Best decision I ever made. Invest in yourself, you won’t regret it!

I went into the office and spoke with the receptionist about getting my teeth pulled and putting the implants back in. She told me they would give me an appointment and Dr. Jacob would sedate me and I would leave with teeth. All of the assistants and staff are extremely kind and caring. They’re Great Professionals. The office and dental rooms are nice and clean. They have all become like a part of my family. Dr.Jacob is incredible!! 💙 He sat down , giving me his entire attention and listened to me explain how I wanted my teeth to look. He’s such a sweet blessing. He wants to make certain that I’m satisfied. That’s not always an easy task. He is a patient, kind and hard working man. I’ll admit that I can be very “picky” at times ( I’m a perfectionist 🤫😁). When I was younger, I didn’t really like going to the Dentist. I get nice compliments on my teeth and eyes everywhere that I go . Now, I love going to the dentist. They’re so friendly and cordial plus I get a hug in return for every hug I give away. That’s a Big WinWin! Thank You Dr.Jacob!!! My new teeth have given my smile back to me once more, as well as confidence . I just love them , they’re so pretty. Dr. Jacob & his staff are all sweet, precious and professional. They cheerfully work hard to please their patients. Thank you so much❣️ I highly recommend. “ The Smile Company ”
